A Call for Understanding and College Football

A Call for Understanding
The execution-style murder of Deputy Goforth was a senseless tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. Emotions are understandably high now, but it is not appropriate to jump to conclusions on the killer’s motive. Additionally, we should not ramp up the rhetoric or focus on our differences, rather we need to understand that both sides have legitimate concerns based on their own individual perspectives. Our country will only get better when we listen to each other, and take time to understand where somebody with a different perspective is coming from. Calls for violence and unfounded accusations will not help us move forward. To hear more about my perspective on this issue watch my interview on CNN here.

Kickoff for Football Season

With classes now in full swing, that means it is time for college football. Both the TSU Tigers and UH Cougars start their seasons tomorrow.

The Tigers begin their season at home; in BBVA Compass Stadium, against Prairie View A&M in the 21st annual Labor Day Classic. The Tigers have shown consistent improvement from year-to-year under coach Darrell Asberry who is entering his fourth year at the helm of the team. The Tigers will look to get out of the gate quickly again this season as they begin their quest for a SWAC championship.

Last season showed that the Big 12 needs to add at least two schools, or risk deserving teams being left out of the playoffs, like Baylor and TCU were last year. The University of Houston is the most deserving and logical school for the Big 12 to add. UH has a proud college football tradition with great players such as Heisman Award winner Andre Ware. Additionally, the Cougars now has an award-winning new 40,000+ capacity stadium, to add to already being the nation’s 4th largest city and a top 10 TV market. A move to the Big 12 would be a natural fit for the Cougars as it would reunite them with their traditional rivals. The Big 12 would also gain another one of only three Tier One public universities for research in Texas, which much like the city of Houston, is a thriving, diverse institution gaining more and more national prominence with each passing year.
